Carrick on Shannon Working towards Purple Flag Town Status

Carrick on Shannon Working towards Purple Flag Town Status

The night time economy in Carrick on Shannon is a major source of employment for the town and generates a significant injection of money into the local economy. All involved in the night time economy are very conscious of ensuring it reatins a high standard of vibrancy and safety for all.

Purple Flag is an accreditation scheme to set standards for a vibrant safe night time economy - town centres that meet the standard can fly the flag. Purple Flag holders say that it has galvanised their evening and night time economy, increased partnership working and improved performance on safety, crime reduction and cleanliness and increased footfall in many towns. Carrick on Shannon is well recognised for its attractiveness for both day and evening/night time visitors and there has been alot of partnership work taking place over many years to reach the standard. This year extra work is taking place to try and achieve Purple Flag Status for the town with assessors due to visit in August.

A number of teams were set up to help achieve the Purple Flag and the application is now ready, the map is prepared and we have seen great work by businesses, the local authority, Gardai, Chamber of Commerce,  Tidy Towns and the Arts in helping the co-ordinator get the application in. The Purple Flag Process is being managed by Nolaig Whyte, Economic Development Officer of Leitrim County Council.

We are delighted with the level of support throughout the town which includes the Tidy Towns and local residents making great efforts with painting and flowers!
