Primary and Secondary Schools

According to the Department of Education and Skills there were 3,560 children enrolled in primary schools in Leitrim for the academic year 2012/2013. There were 1,848 boys and 1,712 girls. In 2012/2013 there were 2,459 pupils, 1,299 boys and 1,160 girls, enrolled in post primary schools throughout the county.

Third Level

Leitrim Third Level Initiative offers a range of courses in Carrick-on-Shannon from colleges such as University College Cork, Athlone IT, IT Blanchardstown and NUI Maynooth. Athlone IT Athlone IT has a reputation as being a pioneer in the area of polymer science and technology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and in more recent years in the area of biomedical materials at postgraduate level.

Sligo IT CAO figures, overall for 2013, showed an increase in the number of Leaving Certificate students listing IT Sligo as their first preference. The Institute’s School of Science alone witnessed a 37 per cent increase in first preference listings for its courses and demand for Computing programmes also increased significantly.

St Angela's College St Angel’s College Sligo specializes in Home Economics education courses. St Angela’s is the only college in the country that trains students to become home economics teachers.

South West College, Enniskillen South West College, Enniskillen provides a wide variety of courses ranging from Computing & ICT to welding.
